A sumptuous & beautiful production befitting Manoogian's stellar collection & its exhibition at these most-prestigious American museums. With a foreword by J. Carter Brown & Samuel Sachs II, respective then-Directors of the National Gallery & the DIA; "A Conversation on Collecting" by Manoogian; scholarly texts & notes by many art-historical authorities; & many magnificent color reproductions of artworks by Dirk Bakker, who was then the chief photographer for the DIA & whom this writer had the pleasure of meeting. The works of art represented in this volume include those by Thomas Cole, Thomas Eakins, William Glackens, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent & many other 19th & 20th century American masters. Loosely attached between pgs. 141-172, folded over upper edges, is a card-bookmark "(With) the Compliments of/ Richard & Jane Manoogian" printed thereon, in fine condition with some wear & rubbing at fold. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art (including works by Glackens & other great American & European artists) & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. Also loosely included, between copyright & contents pages, is a stately card on which is printed at recto "Richard A. Manoogian/ Samuel Sachs II/ and The Collector Relations Committee/ of The Detroit Institute of Arts/ cordially invite you/ and other major collectors/ to a dinner at/ Masco Corporation (Manoogian's company)/ on Wednesday Evening,/ June 28, 1989." The first catalog exhibition had just commenced at the National Gallery earlier that month. On verso, in black & mostly blue ink, are hand-written directions to the event in my mother's elegant script. Also in fine condition with a bit of edge & corner wear, & one crease-wrinkle from upper edge through blank areas to side edge. A most-desirable American art-related collectible in its rarest contemporary form, with enriching ephemera & distinguished insiders' provenance. Book in very fine condition with only a touch of wear, fading to edges & corners of black-cloth front, back covers & spine; very slight rubbing, browning at edges of text block esp. upper edge incl. several very small, light spot-stains near outer edge. Interior very fine with only light browning to page leaves, mostly at blank margins/edges. Dust jacket relatively quite fine-verging-on-very-fine with very slight rubbing, faint scratching & a hint of browning to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; some tiny chips at upper spine-edge, corners with miniscule loss of paper.
