New York, NY: Berry-Hill Galleries, 1994. First Edition. Softcover. “American Paintings VII, 1994”, the topic of today’s curation, was ‘94’s entry to Berry-Hill Galleries’ series showcasing American artworks in their galleries. Berry-Hill, the once illustrious, now ill-fated and defunct gallery started the “American Paintings” series in 1981, the goal of which being to highlight American artists with beautiful color-plates and very well annotated essays on said artist and work. “American Paintings VII” similarly is a selection of 117 American paintings covering roughly 125 years, from 1807 to 1935, spanning the artistic landscape that comprised the 19th and early 20th centuries in American art. Researched and written by Bruce Weber, Director of Research and Exhibitions (1990-2007) “American Paintings VII” features incredible works accompanied by incredibly well written and insightful historical/critical essays. Ultimately, Berry-Hill Galleries, Inc. found themselves tangled in a number of lawsuits around fraud (around sales/investments of artworks) and filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005, and (to this curator's knowledge) has permanently shut-down and is still wrapped up in numerous lawsuits and litigation. All of this is to say that the “American Paintings” series ended as the Berry-Hill found themselves in legal and financial oblivion, making those few volumes that are still out there that much rarer. This volume, “American Paintings VII 1994” is filled with splendid full-color plates, peerless scholarship and well written curations for each piece (which this curator can only admire and be inspired by) and is generally an endlessly interesting and beautiful volume. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum - world travelers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books, and the dearly beloved late parents of our esteemed founder, Arthur S. Nusbaum. Softcover. First edition though not explicated as such, with no reference to subsequent editions or printings. Book is in very fine condition with only minimal wear to fine edges, and very light smudging to front and back covers. An extra handling fee will be added for shipping due to the size and weight of this item. Very Fine. [Item #6410]
