Original Poster: Mirage Editions (Goines, #88)

Berkeley, CA, USA: Saint Hieronymus Press, 1980. First Edition. Single Sheet. This lithograph poster (appx. 18” x 24”) from David Lance Goines (1945-2023), the great American artist, calligrapher & master printer, advertises “Mirage Editions,” an art print publishing press established by Karl Bornstein (1946-2012) that was in business from 1975 to 1994. Bornstein began publishing art in 1972, selling millions of art prints over his career. This design features a toddler gazing up at a train inspired by Goines’ own childhood memories: “Among my earliest memories is that of standing in a station and watching the great, snuffling, chuffing steam engine heave toward me, hauling its train of cars like a dinosaur's tail. It stopped so delicately, exactly where it should and I in awe before it, entranced by its immense shiny intricacy, black as sin and powerful as death.” (goines.net) "David/Lance/Goines/1980" in Goines' characteristic Art-Nouveau-esque facsimile calligraphy is found in the lower left blue area to the right of the main artwork (see image). Single Sheet: First Edition, first-&-only printing, one in an edition of 2,872, 300 of which are signed and numbered and 26 are signed and lettered. Poster is in near fine condition with mild bumping to the fine edges and corners as well as a few small spots on the face, mild-to-moderate creasing to corners, mild spotting to bottom edge near right corner as well as within the artwork near the top left corner and in the bottom half of the boys clothing. The verso sparks new interest with an interesting anomaly: an off-center partial print of Goines’ next design entitled “Eat” (Goines #89, photo included for reference); how this ended up being mistakenly applied to a print remains a mystery. Verso shows mild spotting and scuffing near the top right corner. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Near Fine. [Item #6413]
