San Francisco, CA, USA: North Point Press, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. “We have lived by the assumption that what was good for us would be good for the world. ... We have been wrong. We must change our lives, so that it will be possible to live by the contrary assumption that what is good for the world will be good for us. . . We must recover the sense of the majesty of the creation and the ability to be worshipful in its presence. For it is only on the condition of humility and reverence before the world that our species will be able to remain in it." (Wendell Berry, “The Long-Legged House”) Wendell Berry (b. 1934) is an American novelist, poet, essayist, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer. Prolific and critically beloved, Berry has not only written a smattering of novels and heaps of poetry and essays, but he has also been awarded a litany of illustrious and prestigious awards such as; The Wallace Stegner Fellowship (1958), Guggenheim Fellowship (1961), Rockefeller Fellowship (1965), The Roosevelt Institute's Freedom Medal (2013), and Founders Award (2022) among many others. Compared to the likes of William Faulkner (1897–1962), Berry’s writing is often noted for its candor, vividity, stark imagery, and his fixation with the fictional Kentucky town of Port William. The Wild Birds, the topic of today’s curation, is a collection of six short stories spanning more than three decades, from 1930 to 1967, centered around Wheeler Catlett and the figures who populate Berry’s Port William. Hardcover in clipped dust jacket. First edition thus though not explicated as such at copyright page.
