Original Poster: International House (Goines #84)

Berkeley, CA, USA: Saint Hieronymus Press, 1979. First Edition. Single Sheet. This poster (appx. 16” x 24”) is #84 in the David Lance Goines (1945-2023) oeuvre of lithographic prints. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Berkeley International House, the print features six colors including gold foil stamping, done by Marier Engraving, depicting a large white peace dove behind a black Roman soldier helmet with a red feather plume. International houses were first dreamed up by Harry Edmonds in New York City, founding the first one in 1924 with the funding and support of John D. Rockefeller Jr. Goines writes of this poster, “Students of other races and nations had a hard time finding housing in Berkeley, and at one time some ten percent of all foreign students in the United States were bedded down in the International House. As racial and ethnic prejudice lightened up (as it were) a bit, the emphasis of I-House shifted. It's a lovely building. Probably could use some earthquake work, placed right smack on the Hayward fault as it is. Kind of a metaphor for the uncertainty of the world in general, I can't help but think.” The mission of the International House is “to foster intercultural respect and understanding, lifelong friendships, and leadership skills for a more just and peaceful world.” Single Sheet: First Edition, First-&-Only Printing in an edition of 3327, of which 300 copies are signed & numbered and 26 copies are signed A-Z as artist's proofs. "David/Lance/Goines/1979" in Goines' characteristic Art-Nouveau-esque facsimile calligraphy is found in the upper right gold area to the right of the main artwork (see image). Poster is in Near Fine condition with very minor spotting to several areas; minor creasing to bottom right corner; minor-to-moderate bumping to the fine edges and corners. Near Fine. [Item #6463]
