Henry Miller
London, England, UK: The Opus Press, 1943. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "When I write about Henry Miller, I am, obviously, telling you about him as he appears to me. What I say may or may not be true. It will be supported by quotations from his work, but then his work is voluminous, and what he says in one place may be different from what he says in another. Miller is like that. He lets his fancy rove whither it may lead him." (from Part I, pg. 7) An early study in six parts of the life & work of Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation. The author of this study, Nicholas Moore (1918-1986) was a highly acclaimed, prize-winning British poet. With bibliography, an interesting list of "Books That Have Influenced Miller,” this & other publishers' contemporary advertisements following the study. Small chapbook-format booklet in stapled wrappers, with all points in Shifreen & Jackson, B17, pg. 572. We found & have retained, between blank front endpaper & title page, a small blank card on which is hand-written on one side in cursive black ink: "Compliments of/ Francis(?) Holliday." (see condition description below) From the collection of Dr. Stanley Hurwick Levy (1926-2020), an American Physician who met & conferred with Albert Einstein while a student prodigy at Princeton University during the 1940s, & was among the most legendarily prolific book collectors of them all, over many years. This writer was privileged to attend a presentation/tour conducted by Dr. Levy at his home here in Michigan some years ago, & was duly most-impressed with the breadth & variety of his collection. An intriguing Miller-related collectible in its singular vintage contemporary form, for the scholar-completist collector, with distinguished provenance. In relatively quite fine condition with light rubbing, fading, faint creasing & scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild rubbing, browning & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior (again relatively) fine with light browning to page leaves; faint vertical creases across leaves from covers; light rust-echo from upper edges of first two leaves where card noted above had once been paper-clipped; tiny bumps, creases at corners of a few leaves; small quaint bookseller's sticker affixed at blank margin near lower left corner/edge of inner rear cover with "The/ Holliday Bookshop/ 49 E. 49th St., New York" printed thereon- the bookshop whose eponymous proprietor apparently wrote the included complimentary card noted above. Fine. [Item #6481]
