Original Event Poster: 22nd Ann Arbor Folk Festival (January 30, 1999)

This poster (appx. 17” x 24”) memorializes the 22nd annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival which took place on January 30th, 1999 at the Hill Auditorium. The Ark hosted their 47th annual event Ann Arbor Folk Festival this past January 2024. This poster was designed and printed by local artist Zeke Mallory and features photos of Emmylou Harris, Julie Miller, the band Altan, and the band Moxy Fruvous. Nearly all performers signed their names somewhere on the front side in silver marker. Altan is an Irish folk music band formed in 1987 by lead vocalist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her husband Frankie Kennedy. Members Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciarán Curran, Dáithí Sproule, Dermot Byrne, and Ciarán Tourish each signed over their group photo near the bottom left corner of the poster. The Paperboys are a Canadian folk music band from Vancouver that formed in 1991, and they play a blend of Celtic folk with bluegrass, Mexican, Eastern European, African, zydeco, soul and country influences. Members Tom Landa, Doug Schmidt, Shannon Saunders, Cam Salay, & Paul Lawton each signed in the yellow space near the top left corner. Karen Savoca and her husband Pete Heitzman both signed beneath the photo of Julie Miller to the right of the printed text “Buddy & Julie Miller” in the roster list. The Raisin Pickers are a Michigan-based string band that plays a mix of rustic Appalachian music, old time swing, bluegrass, and swamp-driven Louisiana sounds. Members Carol Palms, Mark Palms, James Suggs, David Mosher, and Sheila Gray each signed over the printed text “6:00 pm” near the center of the poster. Moxy Fruvous were a Canadian politically satirical folk-pop band active from 1989 to 2001. Members Murray Foster, Mike Ford, and Dave Matheson signed over their photo at the bottom right corner, although Jian Ghomeshi’s signature is absent. Andy Breckman had a brief stint as a folk musician in the ‘90s, though he went on to be an American screenwriter, comedian, and radio personality who created the show Monk. American musician and songwriter, Kelly Joe Phelps plays a mixture of delta blues and jazz. She signed next to her own printed name in the roster along with writing, “Thanks for lovin’ us!” Carrie Newcomer is an American singer, songwriter and author who acted as a culture ambassador performing at events organized by the State Department. She signed her name with a heart near the center of the poster beneath the printed text “A UM Major Events” followed by (presumably) her bandmates Steve Mascari, Keith Skooglund, and a James R. whom we have not been able to identify. Award-winning American singer-songwriter duo Buddy & Julie Miller both signed: Julie to the right of her own photo and Buddy next to his own printed name in the roster. Grammy Award-winning country, rock, and americana artistEmmylou Harris signed over her own photo at the top left corner in the black space beneath her chin.
