A Serious Morning
Santa Barbara, CA, USA: Capra Press, 1973. First Edition Thus. Softcover. “If I die and there is a hell, my hell will be a shopping mall. I will trudge down its aisles forever, with only rides on the escalators for relief.”― Andrei Codrescu. Andrei Codrescu (b. 1947) is a Romanian-born American poet, novelist, essayist, screenwriter and commentator for National Public Radio. While Codrescu is, generally, not as well known as say an Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997), or a Charles Bukowski (1920–1994), he is deeply beloved by critics and readers who are familiar and follow his work. Codrescu’s poetry explores themes of identity, exile, and transformation with bold irreverence. The author of dozens of works of poetry, a handful of novels and reams of essays, including titles such as: “License to Carry a Gun” (1970), “The History of the Growth of Heaven” (1973), “In America’s Shoes” (1983), “It was Today” (2003), “Jealous Witness” (2008), and “The Art of Forgetting” (2016) just to name a few. The topic of today’s curation, “A Serious Morning” (1973), is among Codrescu’s earliest published works. A collection of poems, “A Serious Morning,” is the epitome of Codrescu’s writing–sharp, poignant and full of wit–in which he explores themes of politics, exile, and self-discovery. A highly collectible volume from one of the finest poets around! From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder (with the late, great John Sinclair [1941-2024]) of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. Softcover chapbook. First edition thus, though not explicated as such at copyright page. Book is in very fine condition with virtually no wear aside from minor wear at fine edges. Very Fine.
