This poster (appx. 17” x 22”) memorializes the 21st annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival which took place on January 31st, 1998 at the Hill Auditorium. It was designed and printed by local artist Zeke Mallory and features photos of Paula Cole, Guy Clark, David “Dawg” Grisman, & Doc Watson. All performers signed their names somewhere on the front side. American folk/bluegrass music artist Doc Watson (1923-2012) signed near the end of the printed word “Festival,” and mandolinist David “Dawg” Grisman (b. 1945) signed to the right of the printed word “Hill.” Pop/rock vocalist Paula Cole (b. 1958) signed beneath her photo. Folk/country artist Guy Clark (1941-2016) signed vertically to the right of his photo. Contemporary folk musician Cheryl Wheeler (b. 1951) signed below the printed “1998.” The members of Canadian folk rock band Great Big Sea Alan Doyle (b. 1969), Darrell Power (b. 1968), and Bob Hallett (b. 1966) signed: Doyle to the right of the printed word “Saturday,” Power near the bottom edge, and Hallett to the right of the printed “31” below Doyle. American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter Chris Smither (b. 1944) signed vertically to the left of Paula Cole’s photo. The folk duo The Nields is made up of two sisters, Katryna and Nerissa; Katryna signed as “Katy Nields” near the bottom left corner, and Nerissa signed over the logo for the sponsor “Red Hawk.” New York City-based contemporary folk and new age singer/songwriter & harpist Dee Carstensen (b. 1956) signed to the right of the printed “1998.” Contemporary American rock musician Willy Porter (b. 1964) signed above the logo for the sponsor “Zanzibar.” Folk artist Karen Pernick (b. 1962) of Oak Park, MI, signed to the right of the printed word “Folk.” Single sheet: First Edition, presumed First-&-Only Printing.
