The Newly Fallen

New York, NY, USA: Totem Press, 1961. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "The man stood/ in his house/ and thought to himself/ the fence fell down-/ mad elements to be scrutinized.// What a grey morning/ it is it is/ unusual after a night/ where the bright moon/ shone- that was fivethirty/ now it is six" ("The Open Road," first two stanzas, pg. 8) An early collection of poems by Edward Dorn (1929-1999), among the greatest of the Black Mountain School poets along with his colleagues/mentors Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan & Charles Olson. Chapbook in stapled wrappers with Beat-evocative front cover illustration by Fielding Dawson (1930-2002), another great Black Mountain alumnus author & artiste (see our many Dawson collectibles). First edition, first printing though neither specified as such at copyright page. From the collection of Robin Eichele (b. 1941), a noted Mimeograph Revolutionary poet who co-founded the Detroit Artists' Workshop with John Sinclair during the 1960s, & is our good nearby friend. Eichele has hand-written his ownership name ("R. Eichele") in bold black ink near upper left edge/corner of blank inner front cover. An essential, foundational, most-rewarding Dorn collectible in its rarest contemporary form with distinguished & relevant provenance. See also our many other Dorn offerings. In relatively quite fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning, faint scratching & occasional spotting to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; one small spot-stain (coffee?!) at blank area of front cover near upper edge; mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior (again relatively) fine-to-very-fine with only mild browning to blank inner covers & page leaves; tiny bumps, faint creases at mostly upper corners of some leaves. Fine. [Item #6524]
