Original Concert Poster: Tori Amos at Hill Auditorium & Wharton Center (October 15-16, 1994)
Madison Heights, MI, USA: SF&A, 1994. First Edition. Single Sheet. This poster (appx. 10 ½" x 22 1/8") promotes the two performances by the legendarily precocious pianist, singer, and songwriter Tori Amos (b. 1963) happening during October of 1994. At the age of five, Amos received a scholarship to the Peabody Institute, the private music and dance conservatory and preparatory school at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. After six years of classical piano training, she was asked to leave due to “musical insubordination,” according to a Rolling Stone article. According to Amos, it was her interest in pop and rock music that discontinued her classical training. Her talent, however, was a force of its own driven by her chromesthesia and her parents’ support of her performing. To this day, Amos experiments and explores musical genres and styles; she released a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank)” in 2023. As part of her Under the Pink Tour, she made a stop at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor on Saturday the 15th and at the Wharton Center in East Lansing on Sunday the 16th. Hill Auditorium (1913) is the largest performance venue on the University of Michigan campus, legendarily designed by architect Albert Kahn to be acoustically perfect for every audience member. “Under the Pink” was Amos’ second studio album, and the set list for the Ann Arbor performance included a mix of songs off this record as well as her first studio album “Little Earthquakes” (1992) and multiple covers. Artist Mark Arminski began designing and printing posters in the early 1990s, following in the footsteps of his mentors Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, and Gary Grimshaw. His skills in drawing and painting combined beautifully with various printmaking and photography techniques to become his signature style of vibrant contrasting colors on simple, balanced graphics. Pop Art pioneers like Andy Warhol and James Francis Gill brought silkscreens to the forefront of contemporary art; the process involves layers of mesh or screens for each color and stencils that create the sectors to which the paint or ink should be applied per layer. A truly fascinating and delicate artform that is difficult to master, and Arminski’s examples are among the best. Single sheet: First Edition, first-&-only printing, as are all Arminski’s productions. Poster is in Very Fine condition with sharp edges and corners and vibrant colors; one small smudge/scuff can be seen in the teal line separating the orange and pink text. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #6538]
