Loblolly: A Literary Biannual of the Vortex No. 3/4 (Fall/Winter 1988)

Wilson, NC: Loblolly Press, 1988. First Printing. Softcover. This number of the North Carolina literary journal chiefly edited by Tom Braswell features an essay, "Back Country Poet," by Gary Snyder (b. 1930), the Great Beat Generation- San Francisco Renaissance-&-Beyond poet-environmentalist who is still with us at age 94 as of this writing, & has taken his place in the canon of the Library of America. As noted preceding this most-enlightening essay-memoir, "The following article is based on a class lecture, given during the 1983 Summer Writing Program at the Naropa Institute." (pg. 44). Also in this issue are poems & prose by Judson Crews, Gary Eddy, Drummond Hadley, Wallace Kaufman, Pablo Neruda (1904-1973, the iconic Chilean poet) translated from the Spanish by Kaufman & many more; portfolios of artworks by Samuel Cashwan (sculpture) & John Scarlata (photography); reviews; notes on contributors. Trade-format softcover in perfect binding, first-&-undoubtedly-only printing of this short-lived but significant journal named after the species of pine tree. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travelers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. I am somewhat puzzled at finding this item in their collection- as broad & deep as their literary & other interests were, this type of journal inclusive of a Beat Giant such as Snyder is unexemplary. I therefore wonder whether it somehow made its way to their collection from mine! In any case, this is a rich, very scarce Snyder-&-Co. collectible in its singularly rarest contemporary form, with distinguished (if possibly inadvertent) provenance. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with only light rubbing, faint scratching & slight fading of orange color to front, back covers & esp. spine; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; a touch of rubbing, browning to edges of text block. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Fine-Very Fine. [Item #6540]
