Los Angeles, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1971. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by David Bromige, Robert Kelly, & Diane Wakoski. Established in 1966, the Black Sparrow Press was founded by John Martin (b. 1930) and since carved out a legacy for itself that most literary presses could only dream of. Initially Martin founded the press explicitly to publish the works of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) of whom Martin had immense respect, even going so far as to call him the “new Walt Whitman.” Throughout the life of the press, however, Martin would go on to publish many more avante-garde poets and novelists such as: Robert Duncan (1919–1988), Ed Sanders (b. 1939), and Robert Creely (1926–2005) just to name a few. Offered today is one of Black Sparrow’s finest (in the opinion of this curator) publications, The Wise Men Drawn to Kneel in Wonder At the Fact so of Itself. A rare “Christmas gift” from Black Sparrow, The Wise Men Drawn to Kneel in Wonder At the Fact so of Itself is a collection of three poems each one authored by a different poet. Firstly is “The Net” by Canadian-American poet David Bromige (1933–2009). Secondly is “Yesod & Malkuth, That is Advent & Christmas. From ‘Spheres’” by Robert Kelly (b. 1935) prolific novelist and self-proclaimed “deep image” poet. And lastly, we have “The Magi” by Diane Wakowski (b. 1937), Michigan Beat poet legend and severely underrated literary titan. This rare and uniquely exquisite volume is the perfect collectible for any lover of poetry especially Beat obsessives (much like ourselves). Each author has signed this copy at the end of each of their poems beneath their printed names in thin black ink. Hardcover. First signed and numbered edition as stated on the colophon, this particular volume is number 48/100. Book is in very fine condition with only the slightest wear to fine edges. Very Fine.
