New York, NY, USA: Bantam Spectra, 1988. Advanced Reader Copy. “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” William Gibson, Neuromancer, pg 1. William Gibson (b. 1948) is an American-Canadian novelist and essayist known primarily for his work in the realm of science-fiction, and particularly for pioneering the sub-genre of “Cyber-Punk”. In his earliest writings, beginning in the late 1970’s, Gibson was distinctly interested in noir, near-future stories that explored the effects of technology, cybernetics, and computer networks on humans–a kaleidoscopic tapestry of poverty-stricken aesthetics mixed with neon-drenched high-tech. These themes along with the burgeoning, ever-expanding internet would come to largely define his later works; that and his lyrical, highly-poetic prose have come to define and shape science-fiction for the past two decades. Titanic works like: “Burning Chrome” (1982), “Neuromancer” (1984), “Count Zero” (1986), “Pattern Recognition” (2003), “Spook Country” (2007), and “Zero History” (2010) just to name a few. The latter half of these are a string of more realist novels, a product of a shift in Gibson’s writing in the wake of the turn of the century and 9/11. Gibson is widely considered the finest sci-fi author of his generation, beloved by critics, lauded by his peers, and endlessly praised by his readers; Gibson is a master of the genre and each work is a masterpiece of the form. Offered here today is 1988’s “Mona Lisa Overdrive”. Book 3 in the “Sprawl Trilogy,” the book takes place eight years after the events of “Count Zero” and fifteen years after “Neuromancer”, the story is formed from several interconnecting plot threads surrounding a prostitute-turned-hardened-criminal, a Yakuza boss involved in a gang-war, and an artist-junkie-hacker. “Mona Lisa Overdrive” is a novel that demands to be read by any and all lovers of science-fiction, and all enthusiasts of top-notch literary fiction. Softcover. Advanced Reader Copy, as stated on front cover and first title page; first edition though not explicated as such at copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon.
