East Lansing, MI: Michigan State University Press, 1999. First Edition. Softcover. Inscribed & signed by Dan Gerber. “When I give up and turn my attention / to the purr of the grass, the clatter of the aspen, / the clouds lifting off Mt. Teewinot, / I become a curious god, a tar baby, / a clump of grass they must graze. // I reach up and touch the blue with my fingers, / not just the air above my head, / but the sky itself as far as it goes.” (from the titular poem, pg. 1) Pushcart Prize nominee, Michigan Author Award winner (1992), and co-editor (with Jim Harrison (1937-2016)) of the literary magazine Sumac, Dan Gerber’s (b.1940) Trying to Catch the Horses: Poems begins with a quote from Buddhist monk Thich Nhat that reads, "Contemplate seeing your bodily form present before you in the trees, the grass and leaves, the river," which properly introduces Gerber’s naturalist style. Something remarkable about Gerber and his work is that every poem is an act of discovery — both for Gerber and us as readers — that brings us closer to the “truth”, the truth of interconnectedness and unity that informs the world around us and inside of us. Trade-Formart Softcover Original: first Edition though not explicated at copyright page, First Printing as indicated by number sequence thereon.
