Stroker No. 21 (1981)
New York, NY, USA: Stroker, 1981. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features three letters by Mohammed Mrabet, the legendary Moroccan storyteller (translated, as ever, from the Moghrebi language into English by the great Paul Bowles), one written to Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation. Miller’s letter to which Mrabet was replying is provided as well (pg. 35). Also included in this issue: an excerpt by Seymour Krim (1929-1989) “from BOOK OF FAME”; a piece by J. Lawrence Lembo on Miller’s Big Sur & The Oranges of Hieronymous Bosch and his personal discovery of Miller’s expansive oeuvre (pg. 27-32); Joseph Resnick’s poem “Something is Now” and essay “Remembering John Cowper Powys” (pg. 23-24); two poems by Margot de Silva, “Harlem Nights,” & “Question”; a poem by editor Irving Stettner, “Back in New York” (pg. 40); & more! A quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era; an essential collectible from this scarce & significant series—the sixth to continue its emphasis & tribute to Henry Miller after his death the previous year—in its singularly rarest contemporary form. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. Shifreen & Jackson, C669-670, pg. 828. Book is in near fine condition with minor rubbing, browning to the front, back covers; minor bumping, creasing to the fine edges and corners of same; ink from pressing cover art bled through to the interior of front, back cover; pages are yellowing slightly, crisp and unmarked.
