Stroker No. 18 (1981)
New York, NY, USA: Stroker, 1981. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features (as does almost every issue in this series) several contributions by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation ("An Open Letter to Stroker!" incl. facsimile drawing, pgs. 16-20; excerpts from "The World of Lawrence" & "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare," pgs. 20-21, 34; facsimile postcard, pg. 21). Also in this issue are contributions of poetry & prose by Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990), the celebrated & prolific British-cosmopolitan novelist & travel writer best known for his trilogy of autobiographical novels under the umbrella title of "The Alexandria Quartet" who was a close friend & colleague of Miller; Seymour Krim (1922-1989), the acclaimed Beat journalist & critic; Mohammed Mrabet, the legendary Moroccan storyteller (translated, as ever, from the Moghrebi language into English by the great Paul Bowles); & many more. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. Shifreen & Jackson, C660-662, pg. 827. Another quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era; an essential collectible from this scarce & significant series- the third to continue its emphasis & tribute to Henry Miller after his death the previous year- in its singularly rarest contemporary form. In relatively quite fine-to-very-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, faint scratching & occasional creasing to front, back covers & stapled spine; slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; very slight rubbing, browning to edges of text block. Interior fine-to-very-fine with only a hint of browning to inner covers & page leaves; tiny bumps, creases at esp. upper corners & thin edges of some leaves. Fine- Very Fine. [Item #6646]
