Stroker No. 10 (Vol. 4 No. 1, Summer 1979)
New York, NY, USA: Stroker, 1979. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) features three pieces from Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American author & artist whose earlier works were an influence & inspiration to the Beat Generation: “Vienna and Back,” (pg. 4-10), “The Heart of a Boy,” (pg. 20-22), & “A Few Chaotic Recollections,” (24-27). A letter to Miller written by Jay Bochner (b. 1940) during March of 1979 recommends to him Charles Bukowski’s novels Post Office and Factotum. A quote from Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) opines that any art from any time in the past or present is paid for with life, suffering, and blood regardless of public opinion or ever-shifting moral standards. Also included in this issue: a list of “Belief & Technique for Modern Prose,” by one of the Founding Fathers of the Beat Generation Jack Kerouac (1922-1969); excerpts from Blaise Cendrars’ (1887-1961) autobiographical novel Planus; New York poetry salon hostess Emilie Glen’s (1906-1995) poem “Of Roses,” (pg. 10); & more! A quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era; an essential collectible from this scarce & significant series in its singularly rarest contemporary form. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, presumed first-&-only printing. Shifreen & Jackson, C616-618, pg. 825. Book is in fine condition with slight rubbing to front, back covers; slight creasing to the top right corner of front cover & bottom left corner of back cover; minor bumping to fine edges; pages are crisp and unmarked.
