New York, NY: Penguin, 2009. First Printing. Hardcover. “For the eminent historian Paul Johnson, Winston Churchill remains an enigma and a challenge. Soldier, parliamentarian, prime minister, orator, painter, writer, husband, and leader-all of these facets combined to make Churchill one of the most complex and fascinating personalities in history. In Churchill, Johnson illuminates the various phases of Churchill's career, from his adventures as a young cavalry officer in the service of the empire to his role as an elder statesman prophesying the advent of the cold war. Johnson shows how Churchill's immense adaptability joined with his natural pugnacity to make him a formidable leader for the better part of a century. Johnson's narration of Churchill's many triumphs and setbacks, rich with anecdote and quotation, illustrates the man's humor, resilience, courage, and eccentricity” (Front Cover flap). Offered here is Paul Johnson’s (1928-2023) excellent short biography of Winston Churchill (1874-1965): a real service to those curious about Churchill, — those who’d like to know more about this singular eminence and 20th-Century determinant, but don’t have time to read Andrew Roberts’ (considerably meatier) “Churchill: Walking with Destiny.” This is to say nothing of the estimated eight-to-ten million words (read that again!) that Churchill himself penned: including forty-three published, book-length works (which fill appx. seventy-two trade-format volumes). A man like Churchill not only had a lot to say, but he had a lot to do — and he applied himself vigorously to all tasks. Whether that meant vanquishing Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich, or vanquishing “an imperial pint of French champagne” EVERY DAY AT LUNCH really didn’t make much of a difference to this most heroic of egg-shaped men. Hilarities aside, appreciators of bravery and freedom everywhere can look to Churchill for inspiration and fortitude: a fact to which this book indubitably attests.
