Chicago, IL: Nelson-Hall, 1977. First Softcover Edition. Softcover. Self-described social philosopher and Renaissance man Richard Miller (1925-2006) brought readers a broad analysis of the bohemian culture in the United States and its’ dispersal over decades of cultural evolution. The term “protoculture” in anthropology refers to the generational adoption of new behaviors among non-human primates, but Miller applies it to the human cultural behaviors that were injected and dispersed by the youth of the twentieth century. After receiving his PhD from Berkeley in 1961, Miller taught at the San Francisco Art Institute for over 20 years, retiring as Chairman of the Department of Humanities. He was deeply embedded in the hippie counterculture era as a participant and an observer, harvesting theories and stories for his writing. He wrote factually based, fictional novels rife with playful satire a la Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, who himself called Miller’s writing “deliriously serious.” Bohemia is a significant literary accomplishment that elegizes an inimitable era of art, literature, poetry, and philosophy.
