Guerrilla: Free Newspaper Of The Streets Vol. Two No. 1 ("Poetry is Revolution," 1968)
New York, NY, USA: Artists & Writers Militia/Black Mask, 1968. First Edition. “revolutionary suicide does not mean that i and my comrades have a death wish; it means just the opposite. We have such a strong desire to live with hope and human dignity that existence without them is impossible. when reactionary forces crush us, we must move against these forces, even at the risk of death.” Huey Newton, Revolutionary Suicide. A flagship in revolutionary thought, poetry, and news, “Guerrilla” was first published during the summer riots in Detroit in 1967 and the height of the Detroit Free Press literary movement. Founded and run by Allen Von Newkirk (A seminal figure in the Detroit radical scene of the sixties, where he was affiliated with such groups as the Detroit Artists Workshop and John Sinclair's (1941-2024) White Panther Party) and situated squarely in the window of political possibility inaugurated by 1960s riots, the newspaper featured a star-studded roster, with Ellen Phelan (b. 1943) serving as Art Editor, and a list of contributing editors that included Sun Ra (1914-1993), Diane Di Prima (1934-2020), Michael McClure (1932-2020), Stan Brakhage (1933–2003), John Sinclair (1941-2024), Robert Kelly (b. 1935), Marion Brown (1931-2010), David Meltzer (1937-2016), and Joel Oppenheimer (1930-1988). Offered today is Volume 2, Number 1 of “Guerrilla”. This particular broadside edition of “Guerrilla” features the poem "Poetry is Revolution" by LeRoi Jones (1934–2014), along with a text by the editor Allen van Newkirk regarding Jones' arrest and its parallels with those of other African-Americans and calling for the "absolute necessity for total social & cultural revolution now if poetry is to go forward." From the collection of scholar, poet and our dear friend Robin Eichele (b. 1941), noted Mimeograph Revolutionary & co-founder (with the late, great John Sinclair [1941-2024]) of the Detroit Artists’ Workshop. Single sheet, appx. 16 ¼” x 21 ½” . First & presumably only printing. Broadside (appx. 16 1/4 x 21 1/2 inches) in very fine condition with only the slightest wear at vertical and horizontal folds.
