Sure: The Charles Bukowski Newsletter No. 7 (1993)
Ojai, CA, USA: Ojai Valley Book Company, 1993. First Edition. “There's nothing to mourn about death any more than there is to mourn about the growing of a flower. What is terrible is not death but the lives people live or don't live up until their death. They don't honor their own lives, they piss on their lives. They shit them away. Dumb fuckers. They concentrate too much on fucking, movies, money, family, fucking. Their minds are full of cotton. They swallow God without thinking, they swallow country without thinking. Soon they forget how to think, they let others think for them. Their brains are stuffed with cotton. They look ugly, they talk ugly, they walk ugly. Play them the great music of the centuries and they can't hear it. Most people's deaths are a sham. There's nothing left to die.” Charles Bukowski. Founded, edited, and ran by Edward L. Smith, “Sure, The Charles Bukowski Newsletter” was a legendary, albeit short-lived, publication dedicated to the American literary colossus Charles Bukowski (1920–1994). While it only ran for 10 issues (the publication ceased upon the death of Buk), “Sure” was beloved by Bukowski fans the world over. Packed to the gills with poetry, essays, correspondence from and to Buk, and wildly outlandish sketches, each issue of “Sure” was as chaotic, disturbed, and fun as the poet it was dedicated to. Aside from Edward L. Smith (editor and creator), of whom little is known other than the fact that he was a prominent West Coast bookseller, the team responsible for the publication of “Sure” was relatively small, however, it is clear in reading their issues that each and every one was lovingly tended and that everyone involved was a true Bukowski enthusiast. Offered today is issue No. 7, the first “Sure” publication of 1993. This issue of “Sure” features, to this curators knowledge, a heavier focus on poetry than previous issues. Between the iconic Buk sketches, reviews on Buk’s work and some personal essay/anecdotes about Buk are a series of poems from the likes of Steven Richmond (1941-2009), author of countless reams of poetry; Ana Christy, publisher, poet and photographer; and Kevin Coyne, Seattle poet and winner of the 1992 Last Poems Poetry Contest for North America, among many more poets, fans and enthusiasts. Stapled Wrappers. First & only edition. Book is in very fine condition with only minimal wear to fine edges. Very Fine. [Item #6741]
