London, England, UK: Phaidon Press Limited, 1995. First Edition. “Throughout the long and often torturous history of the Jews, the synagogue has been a constant presence and source of spiritual strength. Playing a symbolic as well as a practical role, it has acted as a focus for the faith of countless Jewish communities all over the world. The significance placed on the synagogue, with its rituals and traditions, emphasizes the fact that Judaism is not simply a religion but a way of life. Magnificently illustrated, with much specially commissioned photography from around the world, this book provides a detailed and comprehensive picture of the synagogue and its decoration. Numerous metropolitan and provincial synagogues, from the flamboyantly Moorish to the sparsely contemporary, are represented as a monument to the art and architecture of Judaism. (Abridged Qtn. from Front Flap copy). Offered here is architectural historian Harold A. Meek’s (b. 1922) monumental study of the Jewish synagogue, in which the synagogue’s role in the international development of a diasporic people takes center stage. The etymological roots of the word “synagogue” can be traced back to the Greek word for ‘assembly,’ — and this illustrative factoid speaks volumes. This, because the synagogue is more than a place to learn about and practice Judaism, but a community center and fountain of fortitude. Meek’s treatment of his subject is uniquely valuable: as he approaches it from the perspective of a deeply educated architect, and pairs this training with a deep respect for Judaism as a deathless wisdom tradition. The result of this erudition and respect (in guided concord) reminds this writer of contentions forwarded by Gaston Bachelard in his iconic “Poetics of Space” (1958). As the foreword duly notes, this is “a book to be savoured and treasured,” one that “will inspire and fascinate both Jews and Gentiles alike” [ibid].
