Offered here is issue 5 of Daniel Halpburn (b.1945) and Paul Bowles’s (1910-1999) literary periodical Antæus published by Halpburn’s Ecco Press — which would eventually become a publishing imprint of HarperCollins. Antæus ran from 1970 to 1994 and was first founded and published in Tangier, Morocco but would eventually move to New York City in the mid-1980s. The periodical would become renowned for its international scope and its notable contributors including J.G Ballard (1930-2009), Stephen King (b.1947), Joyce Carol Oates (b.1938), and Leslie Marmon Silko (b.1948). This issue features some notable contributors as well such as W(ystan) H(ugh) Auden (1907-1973) and Richard Hugo (1923-1982), with Auden contributing to the “Documents” section with “An Interview” and Hugo imparting two poems: “A Night with Cindy at Heitman’s” and “Note to R.H From Strongeville”. Other notable pieces include the play “Oulanem, A Tragedy” from revolutionary political theorist Karl Marx (1818-1883); “Ten Unpublished Poems” from American Modernist poet Hart Crane (1899-1932); and “The Courtship of Janet Murphy” from Jane Bowles, a writer, playwright, and wife of Antæus’s co-founder Paul Bowles. You may also notice that among the list of contributing editors is none other than William S. Burroughs (1914-1997), Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, among the Greatest & most influential literary & cultural figures of all time, and the very Patron-Icon of our enterprise.
