One Nation: American Remembers September 11, 2001

New York, NY, USA: Easton Press, 2001. First Edition. On September 11, 2001 at roughly 8:14am, a plane violently crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, and forever changed American history. In the hours that followed, another plane would hit the south tower, one would hit the Pentagon, and another would be shot down over Pennsylvania—thought to be headed towards the White House. The attack was credited to al-Qaeda led by, at the time, Osama bin Laden (1957-2011); the ensuing conflict, which this attack on American soil would draw the country into, would come to define the next two decades of American geo-political history, and go on to destabilize and cause untold death in the Middle East. The “War on Terror” (still on going) was declared in the wake of 9/11 by at the time President George W. Bush (b. 1946) and was used as a pretext to invade Afghanistan, the supposed base of operations for al-Qaeda, and this conflict in and of itself would balloon into larger-scale conflict. Thought to be working alongside al-Qaeda, while also said to be developing WMD’s (Weapons of Mass-Destruction), it was decided prudent and necessary to invade Iraq to topple the government run by Saddam Hussein (1937-2006). In the end, between American, Iraqi, Afghani, Syrian, and Lebanese deaths throughout the duration of this conflict would hit millions. In retrospect, The invasion of Iraq (while it certainly secured massive reserves of Oil for particular American and foreign Oil companies) was seen as a disastrous blunder of foreign policy in the Bush-era. Similarly, the “War on Terror” (which is still ongoing) has only served to cause massive amounts of death and suffering across the globe, and is used to manufacture consent insofar as it concerns America and its allies and their military involvement in conflicts across the world. All of this is to say that, while we are certainly still reckoning with the consequences of 9/11 in the realm of the political, the weight of the tragedy of the attacks haunts those who are old enough to remember it. Offered today is “LIFE MAGAZINE’s” One Nation: America Remembers September 11, 2001.
