Beat Scene No. 38 (2001)

Coventry, England, UK: Beat Scene Press, 2001. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage 2001 number of the indispensable Beat Generation-devoted magazine-format literary journal edited, published & with contributions by Kevin Ring in the UK features tributes to the great primary Beat poet Gregory Corso, who passed away earlier that year, by Pauline Reeves, Vojo Sindolic & Michael Skau; along with several theretofore unpublished poems by Corso himself. Also in this issue is a comprehensive article on substantively all the acclaimed biographies of Jack Kerouac published up to that point by Reeves; a fascinating & informative essay on the legendary Black Mountain College (where Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Edward Dorn et al. held court & formed the school of poetry named after it) by Jim Burns; an intensive interview with David Haselwood, publisher of the fabled Auerhahn Press (uncredited but probably conducted by Ring with assistance from Glen Todd); another of Hard-living, Charles Bukowski-influenced author Dan Fante by Anthony Reynolds; another of Ruth Weiss, the early Beat-Jazz poet (Part 1 of 2, also uncredited but again probably by Ring); yet another of San Francisco Beat-troubador poet A.D. Winans by Brad Evans; an article/review of Diane di Prima's then just-issued, now classic autobiography Recollections of My Life as a Woman by Dawn Swoop; an essay on the poetry of Beat/ San Francisco Renaissance Giant Lew Welch by Darrin Daniel; & yet as ever more, including further reviews, many vintage images throughout & some contemporary ads. Another rich & rewarding issue brimming with Beat insight in this series that never fails to live up, & then some, to its front cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & stapled spine; a hint of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of a few page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #6935]
