This journal comes from the students at the University of Montana in Missoula and their featured work includes creative writing, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. Originally named Venture, the first issue was published in 1953, “supplying a means for the expression of student ideas and creative abilities.” (“To the reader,” Vol. I, No. 1). Venture was published each semester, reaching almost 30 issues between 1953 and 1964. The journal was renamed Garret in 1965, and only about a dozen more issues were printed, the last coming in 1972. The Associated Students of the University of Montana (ASUM) is the student government for the University of Montana-Missoula campuses. The organization was responsible for dozens of journals, magazines, pamphlets, and other publications throughout their history. This issue includes several writers that went on to great success: William Stafford (1914-1993), who was appointed the twentieth Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1970; award-winning novelist James Welch (1940-2003); prolific novelist and playwright John Wheatcroft (1925-2017); and George Venn, a distinguished figure in the Pacific Northwest literary scene. From the collection of Thomas Fitzsimmons (1926-2017), noted American poet, academician & editor, which we have been honored to obtain from his son, Ian Fitzsimmons. Stapled wrappers: presumed first edition, first printing, though neither explicated as such. In good-to-near-fine condition with minor-to-moderate spotting to front, back covers & spine, particularly near the top edge of front cover; minor bumping to fine edges and corners of same; minor scratching, scuffing, & slight age discoloration to covers.
