As a way of mourning and healing from this enormous loss, I began drawing his portraits with charcoal on paper. I did a dozen or so from the photos of him that I had taken and a few from other people’s photos I found online. Then I got the idea to do the portraits of the other Beat poets and writers.” (from Introduction) Iranian publisher Soheyl Dahi (b. 1954) founded the Sore Dove Press in 1986 after relocating to San Francisco, CA. The press specializes in the writings of the Beat Generation, printing special limited-edition books and broadsides; their most recent release in June of 2024 is The Train Whistle: 7 Unpublished Poems by Joanna McClure (b. 1930), Beat poet and the ex-wife of fellow poet Michael McClure (1932-2020). Dahi worked with Jack Hirschman as well, publishing 39 Haikus & 5 Prints in 2018 in an edition of 10 hand-crafted boxes. Dahi’s artistry ranges from photography and design to charcoal portraits such as these. Housed in a stitched leather folio approximately 9 ¼” x 12”, the prints measure 7 7/8” x 10 3/8”. A colophon and an introduction are printed on their own sheets to make a total of 12 sheets. The portraits included in this set are of Jack Kerouac, Bob Kaufman, Jan Kerouac, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Hirschman, Diane di Prima, William S. Burroughs, & Allen Ginsberg. Sheets in Folio: limited edition, number 4 of 12 folios. In very fine condition with all prints similarly very fine. Folio edges are wavy though this has no effect.
