Otto Dix Exhibition Catalog

London, England, UK: Tate Gallery Publications, 1992. First Softcover Edition / Advance Review Copy. Softcover. "Realist, expressionist, Dadaist, traditionalist working in the vein of the German Old Masters, Otto Dix (1891-1969) was all and much more than these labels suggest. His career stretched from Wilhelmine Germany before the First World War, through the war itself, the revolution and counter-revolutions of 1918-20, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Second World War and the postwar split into two countries, East and West, holding up a mirror to the troubled times and extraordinary characters that his unerring eye fixed upon. The mirror may not have produced an exact photographic likeness, it was certainly rarely flattering, but it always focused on what was essential and most characteristic, and it produced memorable images, such as the 'portrait of the Journalist Sylvia von Harden' 1926 or the 'Metropolis (Triptych)' 1928. Dix was one of the greatest German artists of (the twentieth) century and this catalogue, produced to accompany the major exhibition held at the Tate Gallery, seeks to introduce him to an English-speaking audience and to do justice to his many-faceted career." (from back cover) A catalog-survey of the life & work of (Wilhelm Heinrich) Otto Dix (1891-1969), the Great German artist whose ruthlessly realistic portrayals of the horrors of war & the decadence of Weimar-era Germany are unforgettable masterpieces in the canon of world art. Edited by Keith Hartley, then Assistant Keeper at the Scottish National Gallery of Art at Edinburgh; with a Foreword by Tate Gallery then-director Nicholas Serota & essays, introductions by Hartley & other noted authorities.
