Original Exhibition Poster: Vedova Presenze 1935-1968 (September 27- November 17, 1968)
Cento, Italy: Siaca Arti Grafiche, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. This poster (appx. 10 7/8” x 15”) promotes an exhibition of the modern Italian painter Emilio Vedova (1919-2006) at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy. The Galleria civica d'arte moderna is located in Turin, Italy, and is home to modern and contemporary art from the likes of Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. The Galleria was involved in the production of this exhibition, but it was hosted at the Renaissance-era palace in Ferrara, a commonly-utilized venue for exhibitions and other events. Emilio Vedova was born in nearby Venice and spent many years on the faculty of the Accademia di Belle Arti there. Vedova was primarily self-taught and found inspiration in art movements such as Cubism and Expressionism. He admired the works of Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso. Vedova was a major figure in the Arte Informale, or Informal Art, movement, along with Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri, which began during the mid-1940s in post-World War II Europe. At the end of World War II, Vedova took an active part in the liberation of Venice, and in 1946 he joined the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, a movement that aimed at reconciling social revolution in artistic expression. These Informal artists’ approaches to painting and sculpture were generally expressionistic and experimental, and the movement paralleled the Abstract Expressionism movement that was taking place at the same time in the United States. Vedova explored three-dimensional space in his works focusing on depth and perspective with the abstract shapes and bold colors.
