Harper's Magazine Vol. 242 No. 1450 (March 1971)
New York, NY, USA: Harpers Magazine Co., 1971. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Presented here is the March 1971 issue of Harper’s Magazine highlighting Norman Mailer (1923-2007), the prize-winning novelist & a towering figure in American fiction & journalism. This issue features an excerpt from Mailer’s “Prisoner of Sex"; fiction from Johanna Kaplan (b.1942) and poetry from Romanian-born French poet Paul Celan (1920-1970), and the iconic British-American poet W.H Auden (1907-1973). Sometimes it seems like magazines are a dying art form so it is really special to see a collectible like this in such good condition and featuring really great minds like that of Mailer and Auden. A truly fascinating issue focused on exploring the relationships between liberation & subjection, the body, the spirit, and physical love. The editor of this issue was American writer Willie Morris (1934-1999) From the collection of Laurence Goldstein (1943-2023), poet, editor, and professor in the University of Michigan Department of English Language and Literature. Stapled wrappers: First edition & first printing though neither stated at copyright page. Magazine is in fine condition with moderate rubbing to front and back cover; mild creasing at upper left corner of back cover; remains of postage label on lower right corner of front cover; and mild toning to edges of interior pages.
