New York, NY, USA: High Risk, 1995. Advance Reading Copy. Softcover. Ghost of Chance is an adventure story set in the jungle of Madagascar and filled with the obsessions that mark the work of the man who Norman Mailer once called ‘the only American writer possessed by genius.’ While tripping through the author’s trademark concerns— drugs, paranoia, and lemurs, this short novel tells an important story about enviornmental devastation in a way that only Burroughs can tell it.” (from back cover) Presented here is a real delicacy to the Third Mind Books palette. This extremely unique book in the Burroughs oeuvre is one-part historical fiction with a trademark Burroughsian bent (strange viruses which plague humankind make a notable and timely appearance, as well as "Greasy Ghost" lubricant and descriptions surrounding the circumstances which enabled the first ruffed lemur birth in captivity anywhere in 40 years.) He even ends the work uncharacteristically by asking his readers to donate to the Duke University Primate Center, which he says "needs support from concerned individuals." (pg.58) Softcover: First edition and first printing because as this is an “advance uncorrected proof”.
