Original Concert Poster: Youngbloods, It's a Beautiful Day, Santana et al. (June 28-30, 1968)

San Francisco, CA, USA: Family Dog Productions, 1968. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14” x 20”) announcing a performance at Avalon Ballroom featuring the Youngbloods, It’s a Beautiful Day, and Santana on June 28 to 30, 1968. A first-&-only printing according to Eric King (King, FD-125-OP-1, pg. 184), the design (titled “Alice Jaundice”) was a collaboration by David Warren and L. Kent Hollister. Hollister drew the central face based on a portrait of a teenage Alice Liddell (1952-1934) which he came across in a book, hence the title, and Warren added the border and lettering. Alice Liddell was the acquaintance and muse of Charles Dodgson, who under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll penned the novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Scholars disagree as to the extent the character was based on Liddell, but her reputation as “the real Alice” has persisted over time. The mid-nineteenth century saw the introduction of photography, and according to King, “a number of women became photographers, and they sought interesting women as models.” As the daughter of an ecclesiastical dean at Oxford University, Alice matured into an intellectual and self-confident woman, and she became the subject of photographers and artists. The portrait referenced for Hollister’s drawing was done by Julia Cameron, and it captures Alice’s impressive poise and self-confidence at a young age. The reference to Carroll’s psychedelic-fueled story was common in the art scene of the late 1960s as “reading it stoned, often aloud to a group of equally stoned listeners, was a common hippie practice.” (King, pg. 186) The Youngbloods were a psychedelic rock band formed in 1965 led by Jesse Colin Young (b. 1941). It’s a Beautiful Day was formed during San Francisco’s Summer of Love in 1967 by husband and wife David and Linda LaFlamme and remained active until 1973. Their unique sound blended elements of rock, jazz, folk, and classical music. The group reunited in 2000 and performed together until the 2020 pandemic shutdown. Santana Blues Band, better known as simply Santana, formed in 1966 led by guitarist Carlos Santana (b. 1947). This performance happened the year the group secured their first record deal, nearly a year before their eponymous debut album. Now one of the best-selling groups of all time with 25 studio albums, Santana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Single sheet: first edition, first-&-only printing. King, FD-125-OP-1, pg. 184. In relatively very fine condition with only a few tiny bumps to the fine edges and corners and very minor creasing to the bottom left corner. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore an extra handling fee of $5.00 will be required. Very Fine. [Item #7064]
