Original Exhibition Poster: Moderne: David Gebhard Lunchtime Slides (March 11, 1970)(Blue Version)
Berkeley, CA, USA: Berkeley Graphic Arts, 1970. First Edition. Single Sheet. As one of several hubs of creative innovation, Berkeley (and San Francisco at large) has hosted an array of unique and impactful events across many fields. The University of California, Berkeley, is the alma mater of many notable names in Silicon Valley as well as creatives, like writer Joan Didion. The hippie counterculture developed in this region throughout the 1960s with the support and contributions of our beloved Beat poets and artists, reaching its peak in the Summer of Love in 1967. David Gebhard (1927-1996) was an architectural historian and a specialist on the architecture of California dedicated to the preservation of Santa Barbara architecture. Gebhard was on the faculty of the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1961, and he served as the director of the University Art Gallery where he established the Architectural Drawing Collection which has grown into one of the largest in the country. “Moderne” refers to the Style Moderne architecture, closely related to Art Deco, which originated in 1920s Paris. The event promoted by this poster was presumably a lecture or presentation by Gebhard on the architectural movement and its history. The design features a unique cut-out top edge that creates the shape of an art deco building facade, and it is printed on very thin, delicate paper. An alternate printed on beige paper is also available (see our item #7065). The designer of this poster Marc Treib (b. 1943) is now professor Emeritus of Architecture at the College of Environmental Design. Single sheet: presumed first edition, first-&-only printing, as was typical for events of the era. In near fine condition with minor bumping to the fine edges and corners; minor tear along right edge near center; minor color-fading along bottom edge; minor creasing to several of the cut-out corners at top edge; faded red ink along this edge on the verso bleeds through to the recto; verso clean otherwise. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore an extra handling fee of $5.00 will be required. Near Fine. [Item #7089]
