Stroker No. 23 (1982)
New York, NY, USA: Stroker Magazine, 1982. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Presented here is issue 23 of the literary-art-cultural journal edited by NYC St. Marks Place underground denizen Irving Stettner (1922-2004) featuring (as does almost every issue in this series) contributions by Henry Miller (1891-1980). Other interesting contributors include Greek-born painter Ioannis Glykokokalos (1937-2017); French painter and sculptor Pierre Jacquemon (1936-2001); Moroccan author, artist and storyteller of the Ait Ouriaghel tribe in the Rif region Mohammed Mrabet (b.1938) translated by his friend the Legendary Paul Bowles; and others! Another highlight from this issue is “About TOMMY TRANTINO” (pg. 40) and the observant Stroker fanatic will recognize prison writer Tommy Trantino (b.1936) a recurring contributor to many other issues. “About TOMMY TRANTINO” responds to misstatements about Trantino’s court case — and character — and it’s very interesting to see how crime cases are not so much “built” as they are “crafted” into whatever narrative the court is trying to build. A quintessential exemplar of the later Mimeograph Revolution NYC Lower East Side Zine era; an essential collectible from this scarce & significant series in its singularly rarest contemporary form. Stapled wrappers: First edition and first printing. Shifreen & Jackson, C676, pg. 828. In very fine condition with minor crease at outer edge of front cover near bottom and mild creasing at lower left corner of back cover. Very Fine. [Item #7113]
