New York, NY, USA: Harry N. Abrams, 1983. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. "James Mallord William Turner has been termed England's greatest painter. In a career that spanned the late eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth, he painted landscapes- luminous, mystic visions of nature- that forecast some of the most avant-garde of twentieth-century painting, frequently leaping beyond the Impressionists. The treatment of light in Turner's work, seen especially in the lemons, golds, and rusts of his sunrises and sunsets and in the blues of his seas and mountains, has captivated generations of art lovers." (from front flap) A survey of the life & works of J(ames) M(allord) W(illiam) Turner (1775-1851), the great British artist whose evocative paintings & watercolors were sui generis & way-ahead of their time. Author John Walker (III, 1906-1995) was a most-distinguished art curator & scholar who served as the second director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC during 1956-1969. With an introductory essay & commentary throughout by Walker, & 94 reproductions of classic Turner artworks, 44 in color. Large-format hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition thus of 1983 in publisher's Masters of Art Series, presumed first printing though not specified as such at copyright page, originally published (we believe) in a different form in 1971. From the collection of Barbara (1935-2023) & Irving (1933-2018) Nusbaum, world travellers, connoisseurs, eminent collectors of art & books- the dearly beloved parents of this grieving writer. Irving Nusbaum was particularly enamored of Turner's artworks, which he viewed with deep appreciation in museums around the world. He always wanted to acquire an original Turner artwork, but never got around to it. A sumptuous & exemplary Abrams production; an essential Turner collectible with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of light-brown cloth front, back covers & spine; small creases where once-folded by an enthusiastic Irving Nusbaum at blank upper corners of ten page leaves; a hint of browning mostly at blank margins-edges of leaves. Dust jacket relatively very fine with only slight rubbing, mostly faint scratching to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same.
