New York, NY, USA: Harry N. Abrams, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. “Glass animals are among the most universally admired—and widely collected—art forms in glass. For more than 3,500 years artisans have fashioned animals, both real and fanciful, both wild and domestic, in an astonishing array of forms and for a wide diversity of uses—as figurines, perfume bottles, jewelry, paperweights, beakers, tiles, plaques, lamps, vases, and stained-glass windows.” (from front flap) Albane Dolez is an expert in art preservation and glass display cases with the desire to design the most transparent display cases possible. She was pivotal in the manufacturing of the display cases of the Department of Egyptian Antiquities at the Louvre Museum. Her company Veralbane works with museums and historic sites to assist in art preservation or glass decoration. Her fascination with glass animals stemmed from her work with museums and the realization that cultures all over the world tend to depict animals in glass. The symbolism of some animals may be a factor, and the natural world has always been a source of inspiration for artists of all types. Glass sculptures, stained glass windows, mosaic designs, and functional pieces like lamps are just a few examples included by Dolez in her only published work offered here in its first-&-only form.
