Stapled Wrappers. “True genius began when, / without prior discovery / or books, / without laboratories / or equipment, / without formulas / or equations / or sophisticated language, / people who covered their nakedness / with animal skins / and cured their rotten teeth / by pulling them out / observed a shaft of dry brown wheat / and saw a loaf of bread.” (“The Scientific Mind,” Cathrine Lynn, pg. 32) This later number of the legendary literary journal edited by the late Marvin Malone features poetry and prose from fifteen different writers, and the featured poet of this issue is Catherine Lynn with an 11-page spread including 10 pieces total. In her poetry, Lynn observes the experiences of womanhood and conveys stories of friendship and mental struggle. The other writers featured in this issue execute a variety of poetic styles and structures that anyone can enjoy. Four poems from Gerald Locklin (1941-2021) are followed by two from Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) to close out this issue. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, one of an edition of 700 hand-numbered copies of which this is No. 296/700 as stated at colophon: “The edition of this issue has been limited to 700 numbered copies, the first 70 being signed by Catherine Lynn. The copy now in your hand is: 296” (pg. 40). Another rich & scarce issue in this most-collectible series, of particular importance to the Bukowski devotee with its exemplars of Buk's very late works.
