Wormwood Review Vol. 27 No. 4 (No. 108, 1987)

Stockton, CA, USA: The Wormwood Review, 1987. Limited First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. “There is a quality of Japanese water / that makes everyone submerged in it / laugh like they never laughed before. // The clarity of the oriental fluid / and its soft, oxygenated texture / combine with its boundless plenitude / to life the immersed into moods ranging / from giddiness to hysteria.” (“Japanese Water,” Collins, pg. 100) This later number of the legendary literary journal edited by the late Marvin Malone features an early appearance by the Poet-Laureate-To-Be William James ("Billy") Collins (b. 1941), now a highly acclaimed & distinguished American poet & academician. Collins, then a professor at Lehman College and a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts, published his third poetry collection, one of his most notable works, The Apple That Astonished Paris, the year following this publication (see our item #5581). He would go on to serve as Poet Laureate from 2001 ro 2003 and release more than a dozen more books of poetry, including Nine Horses (2002, see our item #7149) and The Trouble with Poetry and Other Poems (2005, see our item #7147). This issue also includes two poems from Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), “Speed!!!!!!!!!!” and “Release” (pg. 116-117). Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, one of an edition of 700 hand-numbered copies of which this is No. 134/700 as stated at colophon: “The edition of this issue has been limited to 700 numbered copies, the first 70 being signed by Billy Collins. The copy now in your hand is number: 134” (pg. 48). Another rich & scarce issue in this most-collectible series, of particular importance to the Bukowski devotee with its exemplars of Buk's very late works (Debritto, B1385, pg. 345) In fine condition with mild creasing to the bottom right corner to leave a slight curve at both covers and pages; & mild bumping to the fine edge and corners. Fine. [Item #7158]
