Wormwood Review Vol. 9 No. 4 (No. 36, 1969)
Stockton, CA, USA: The Wormwood Review, 1969. Limited First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage 1969 issue of the legendary literary journal edited by the late Marvin Malone features a special section, delineated by orange-colored paper stock, entitled "Two Williams," with five poems by William Wantling (1933-1974), the acclaimed & much-(partly self-)mythologized American poet; followed by "Academy 23" & "Postscript to Academy 23" by William S. Burroughs- Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, among the foremost literary & cultural figures of all time, indeed the very Patron-Icon of our enterprise. This famous WSB essay & its shorter postscript, both written in a relatively linear, lucid style at the end of his cut-up decade, are full from beginning to end with classic Burroughsian allusions & significance. (pgs. 15-26). Maynard & Miles, C247, pg. 161; Shoaf, Section III, No. 144, pg. 138; Schottlaender (new 5.0 edition!), C262, pg. 61. Preceding & following this section are contributions by a variety of some-noted poets, but for our Third Mind purposes it is WSB in this uniquely highlighted & respected format that most distinguishes this issue. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers, one of an edition of 700 numbered copies. This copy has the word "EXCHANGE" in capital letters stamped where normally a hand-number would be written at colophon (pg. 40). A most-important issue in this venerable & collectible series, of utmost interest & an essential acquisition for the WSB devotee. In relatively quite near-fine-to-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning, faint scratching & occasional spotting to front, back covers & stapled spine; a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting with miniscule interior bleeding; very slight rubbing, browning to edges of text block. Interior fine-very fine with only a hint of browning to blank inner covers & page leaves (the latter chiefly at blank margins/edges, with no apparent browning to WW/WSB orange section); tiny bumps at corners of some leaves; minimal rust-bleeding noted above. Near Fine- Fine. [Item #7162]
