Original Flyer-Broadside: The Poetry Center presents Andrei Voznesensky
San Francisco, CA: 1979. First Printing. Single Sheet. Offered here is a unique piece of Second San Francisco Renaissance ephemera relating to the great Russian poet, Andrei Voznesensky (1933-2010). “Voz” — as he’s known, colloquially to his readers — has long enjoyed association with several giants of Mid-Century American Verse (particularly in the Beat/Beat-affiliated context, such as here. He enjoys the separate, additional distinction, however, of having earned the respect of poets from an earlier epoch: poets like W.H. Auden (1907-1973) whose careers meaningfully began at or near the end of the High Modern period. Voz enjoys the great honor of having been translated into English by one of the language’s greatest versifiers — a privilege not afforded universally, to be sure. Our research indicates that the event advertised on this small-format, promotional flyer-handbill took place on Friday, November 30th of 1979. As a piece of mid-century American literary ephemera — and one with direct reference to the map-spanning enthusiasms (or ‘cosmopolitan wont’) of the Second San Francisco Renaissance and its authors, this unique Voznesensky collectible is alluring from both MCAL historians & readers of Russian literature, worldwide. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our above-mentioned book or consult the catalog for the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (Item No. 1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book, as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents (which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site). Small-format, promotional flyer-handbill [initially folded in half]: the first & only printing of this locally-posted reading notice, which Crowe likely pilfered directly from City Lights Books [who sold tickets to the event]. Broadside in strong near fine condition with only minute shelf-wear, light bumping to fine-edges & corners of recto & verso sides; minute-to-mild exhibits of age-toning, spotting, & similar [low-impact] coloration-based wear at select locales on recto & verso sides, otherwise clean and alluringly frameable. Near Fine. [Item #7219]
