San Francisco, CA: Golden Mountain Press, 1958. First Edition, Fourth Printing. Stapled Wrappers. "And after it became obvious that the President had gone to/ Gettysburg fourscore and seven years ago and had given/ himself to the unfinished task// Then it was that the natives/ of the Republic began assembling in the driving rain from which/ there was no escape- except Peace" (third page, first two stanzas) The legendary Jeremiad-poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the great American poet, publisher & bookseller who was among the foremost figures of the Beat Generation, the San Francisco Renaissance & Beyond. His third-ever official publication following the classics Pictures of the Gone World (1955, see our item No. 7006) & A Coney Island of the Mind (1958, see our item No. 7250), the poem's vehemently anti-war-&-American-Establishment stance prefigures the explosive 1960s counterculture. Pamphlet in stapled wrappers, first edition, fourth printing with all points in Morgan, A3, pg. 17. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe (b. 1949, see our item No. 1010), the acclaimed American poet & publisher who was at the center of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance during the 1970s. Ferlinghetti was one of the most important members of the original BG/SFR to mentor & collaborate with Crowe & his BBG/SSFR group, & in Starting From San Francisco (see our item No. 3071), published by Third Mind Books, Crowe refers quite extensively to Ferlinghetti & his critical role between these literary movements/generations. An essential Ferlinghetti collectible in its fourth-rarest (still very scarce) contemporary form, with outstandingly distinguished & relevant provenance. See also our item No. 7257.
