Beatitude No. 23 (February 1976)
San Francisco, CA: Beatitude, 1976. First Edition. Stapled Sheets. The brain-child of Bob Kaufman (1925–1986), one of the most important–and most original–poets of the twentieth century, Beatitude has been a staple of San Francisco poetry for decades–going so far as to transcend the Bay Area and have a not insignificant impact on the literary world writ large. A legion of poets have manned the helm since Bob initially conceived of the magazine, including but not limited to: Neeli Cherkovski (1945–2024), Fanny Renoir, Paul Wear, Luke Briet, and Eileen Kaufman (1922–2015), just to name a few. While the publication has changed hands throughout the years, the goal has remained the same: “Publish great, often underground poetry.” Offered today is the February, 1976 issue, Beatitude 23. The twenty-third issue of a small press poetry magazine dedicated to the San Francisco Beat Poetry movement, Beatitude 23 contains many local and international poets who, at the time, were considered far too “unacceptable” for most publishing houses. Included are Andre Codrescu (b. 1946), Diane di Prima (1934-2020), Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), Anne Valley Fox, Kaye McDonough (b. 1943), Jonas Mekas (1922-2019), Jack Micheline (1929-1998), David Moe, Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), Phillip Suntree, & Ken Wainio (b. 1952). From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our book Starting From San Francisco: Thomas Rain Crowe in Conversation with Third Mind Books (item #3071) & the catalog for the Crowe archive (see item #1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents, which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site. Stapled sheets. First & presumably only edition.
