New Westminster, B.C., Canada: Douglas College, 1973. First Printing. Softcover in Sewn Binding. (Debritto, B777, pg. 250). This early number of the academic literary-art-cultural journal published at Douglas College in British Columbia & then-edited by David Evanier (the now-noted American author & biographer) features a suite of exemplary poems by Charles Bukowski (1920-1994), the great American cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & racetrack. The poems, listed in the order they appear in Abel Debritto’s esteemed bibliography of Bukowski, are as follows: [1] “All God’s Chilldren Got Troubles”; [2] “I Can’t Stay in the Same Room as That Woman for Five Minutes”; [3] “You Do It While You’re Killing Flies”; [4] “Untitled: I get all the latest hit tunes”; [5] Dragging Around the Heights With Typewriter Fingers”; & [6] “The Artist.” Also in this issue are contributions of poetry & prose by editor Evanier (the poem “To Charles Bukowski”) & several others of interest or note. Be sure to check the images attached to this listing for a full list of contributors & contents. Of special interest to Your Devoted VP-of-Operations here at Third Mind Books, however, is the inclusion of Charles Reznikofff (1894-1976) — a huge influence on the great Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), as well as this author (who listened keenly to Allen’s lectures on Reznikoff, & benefitted greatly from them). Without Reznikoff, Your Devoted VP-of-Operations here at TMB wouldn’t have a Hopwood Award, to be sure. Reznikoff’s contribution consists of “Five Poems,” mostly untitled but referred to here “Emily Dickinson-style” (e.g., with ‘an index of first lines’ listed as ‘titles’ where formal titles were forgone). Reznikoff’s contributions, then, read as follows: “Five Poems” ([1] “The blind man with a white cane…”; [2] “Listen!”; [3] “Exodus 3:12”; [4] “City Lawn”; & [5] “Reading German poets of the last century…”]. Trade-format softcover in sewn binding, presumed first-&-only printing. A rich & rewarding collectible of particular interest to the Bukowski devotee-completist. In very fine condition with only minute-to-minor shelf-wear, light rubbing, & a few low-impact exhibits of extremely light bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; binding tight & interior impressively clean. Very Fine. [Item #7276]
