Original Event Flyer: "Bukowski Reads His Poetry" (September 14, 1973)

San Francisco, CA: City Lights Poets Theatre, 1973. First Printing. Single Sheet. Offered here is the incredibly rare promotional flyer for an infamous, well-documented reading Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) gave at the City Lights Poets Theatre in San Francisco, CA on September 14, 1973. The audio for this reading, which was released as an LP (also highly-desired by collectors) as “Bukowski: Poems & Insults! – Live Reading, City Lights Poets Theater, San Francisco, September 14, 1973” routinely fetches upwards of $250 on the secondary market. Prior to our acquiring this flyer, we had never seen the small, square version of the flyer (4” x 4) and had only seen the appx. 11” x 17” version of the flyer in clips from Taylor Hackford’s (b. 1944) documentary of Bukowski (as featured in John Dullaghan’s more recent documentary on Buk, “Born Into This”). This listing thus constitutes an incredible opportunity for Bukowski collectors to secure a variant edition of this flyer they may not have known existed, and we are proud to offer it here at TMB. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our book, Starting from San Francisco: Thomas Rain Crowe in Conversation with Third Mind Books (Item No. 3071) & the catalog for the Crowe archive (Item No. 1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents, which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site. Small-format reading flyer-announcement: the first and only printing of this delectably rare Bukowski collectible. In very fine condition, virtually as new with faintest, almost non-existent edge-wear & slightest evidence of age-toning to blank verso side, otherwise pristine. Very Fine. [Item #7304]
