Gretna, LA: Pelican Publishing Company, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed & signed with caricature by Charles Brooks. Inscribed & signed with caricature by Charles Brooks. "The turbulent events that shaped the world of 1974 offer provocative targets for 139 leading editorial cartoonists from the United States and Canada in this outstanding collection of visual commentary. Gerald Ford's rise to the presidency, the growing threat of renewed war in the Middle East, the quiet courage and stirring literature of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and a world perilously short of food, energy and peace- these rank among the major topics that attracted the attention and talents of editorial cartoonists during the year. The third volume of an annual series, this pictorial history of the year vividly reflects the diversity of viewpoints and styles of the men- and women- whose artful interpretations of people and events appear regularly in newspapers, magazines, and television news programs." (from front flap) The third volume of selected editorial cartoons edited & with contributions by Charles Brooks (1920-2011), the award-winning editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham (Alabama) News & former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. With Forewords by Barry Goldwater (1909-1998), the eminent Republican U.S. Senator; & Hubert Humphrey (1911-1978), the legendary Democratic U.S. Senator & Vice President (both veterans of political cartoon depictions). With a riveting assortment of hilariously satirical, delightful-disturbing editorial cartoons that cover & comment upon the figures & happenings of the highly eventful year of 1974- the Watergate debacle, President Richard Nixon's resignation & Gerald Ford's ascention to the Presidency, & much more all over the world. Large-format hardcover in clipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as stated at copyright page. On recto of short title page (second page leaf), on publisher's plate affixed thereon, Brooks has hand-written & signed in olive-green ink: "TO: Bill Plumb-/ With best wishes,/ (signed) Charles/ Brooks." To the left of this inscription & signature, Brooks has hand-drawn a caricature of a donkey with a wide-eyed, shocked expression- presumably representative of the Democratic Party's predicament (then & now?...). A fascinating, thoughtful & most-enjoyable compilation sure to bring flashbacks & guffaws to the older Third Mind collector (like this writer); in its rarest contemporary form & greatly enriched by Brooks' inscription, signature & caricature. Book in fine-to-very-fine condition with only slight wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; a touch of rubbing to edges of text block. Interior very fine, appearing substantially mint. Dust jacket relatively fine-to-very-fine with light rubbing, a hint of browning & occasional spotting, very small markings to front, back covers, spine & flaps; some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Fine-Very Fine / Fine-Very Fine. [Item #7305]
