Original Poster: Beatitude Reading of San Francisco Poets (June 21, 1976)

San Francisco, CA: Beatitude Press, 1976. First Printing. Single Sheet. A broadside-poster (measuring 8.5 x 11') advertising a Beatitude Magazine benefit reading that took place on June 21st, 1976, and featured several Baby Beat luminaries in concert with a few Beat predecessors. Among the predecessors, we have David Meltzer, for example — whose inclusion in Don Allen’s legendary anthology of 1960, The New American Poetry, 1945-1960 firmly established him as one among the founding generation of San Francisco Renaissance authors. Among Second San Francisco Renaissance authors we have key participants like Luke Breit, editor of the highly influential, re-inaugural issue of Beatitude Magazine, Beatitude No. 21, as well as Kenneth Rexroth’s mentee, Barbara Szerlip & the most respected Surrealist of the SSFR, Ken Wainio. This reading, staged in June of 1976 to raise money for more issues of Beatitude & more Beatitude-sponsored events & publications, is exemplary in the way it demonstrates how creation and performance were always at the organizational core of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. From the archive of Thomas Rain Crowe [b. 1949], the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our book, Starting from San Francisco: Thomas Rain Crowe in Conversation with Third Mind Books (Item No. 3071) & the catalog for the Crowe archive (Item No. 1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents, which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site. In strong near fine condition with only mild-to-moderate edge-wear, age-toning, light bumping, some small horizontal, as well as vertical creasing to fine-edges & corners of recto & verso side; other than this, the only other item worth noting (which We believe actually enriches the listing & attests to its provenance) is an inscription near topmost fine-edge which delineates what this item was printed for—and while it makes sense to attribute such a notation to TRC, it is not written in TRC’s hand. See photos attached to this listing to view the intriguing provenance-related inscription yourself! Near Fine. [Item #7310]
