Beatitude No. 30 (1980)
San Francisco, CA: Beatitude, 1980. First Printing. Wrappers. Signed by Lawrence Ferlinghetti & Joanna McClure. "i've sailed on ships created from paper/ to ports where the sun is not half so real/ as when it pours into my window/ awakening me from thoughts of love// through stormy waters i travelled/ shaping mast into body and soul/ of wise magicians who stood on cliffs/ above plains of slaughter long ago" (Neeli Cherkovski, "From an Amsterdam Notebook," first two stanzas, pg. 25). This thirtieth number of the most-important & legendary literary journal, first founded by members of the original Beat Generation/ San Francisco Renaissance in the late 1950s & revived by those of the Baby Beat Generation/ Second San Francisco Renaissance in the 1970s, is co-edited & with contributions of seven poems (the first quoted above) by Neeli Cherkovski (1945-2024), a key figure who with his close friend & colleague Thomas Rain Crowe was at the center of the BBG/SSFR phenomenon & its cross-polinations with the original BG/SFR writers. Co-edited by the great Beat-&-Beyond polymath Raymond Foye (b. 1957). With poetry by some of the most illustrious Baby Beats, their Beat mentors & the revered progenitors of both Generations, including Charles Baudelaire (translated by Oliver C. Dombey); Kirby Doyle; Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Bob Kaufman; Kaye McDonough; Rainer Maria Rilke (translated by John Mueller); Nanos Valaoritis; Ken Wainio & more. At the first page of his contribution, "Paris Transformations" (pgs. 28-29), Ferlighetti (1919-2021) has hand-written his signature (customarily last name only) in bold black felt-tip ink, perpendicular with & to the right of first section. Doyle's poem, "Pre-American Ode" (pgs. 1-14) is preceded on opposite leaf by its dedication "...to Jane McClure," the daughter of primary BG/SFR poets Michael McClure (1932-2020) & his former wife Joanna McClure (b. 1930). Joanna McClure has cursively hand-written "-my daughter(squiggle) in bold black ink at an upward angle above the dedication, & has hand-written her signature, also at an angle & in the same ink, below it. Large-format journal perfect-bound in wrappers, first-&-only printing. A very significant & exemplary issue in the utmost-collectible Beatitude series, greatly enriched by the signatures of two iconic Beat figures who were inspirations & mentors to its revivors. In relatively quite fine condition with mild rubbing, browning, faint scratching & sparse spotting, small stains to front, back covers & spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; light rubbing, browning to edges of text block.
