Toluca, Mexico: Counterculture Studies Center & New Collage Press, 2005. First Bilingual Edition. Softcover. Signed by Neeli Cherkovski to Thomas Rain Crowe, the co-authorial founder[s] of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. “It’s okay now, and may continue / to be fine, the city is in my head, a single bird / flies overhead, traffic moves / at a normal pace, although discordant notes / rock the tempo, I fear / a dry season creeping / into libraries” (from “City in My Head,” p. 55). Offered here is FRONTERAS ROTAS, the a bilingual (Spanish & English) collection of poems authored by Neeli Cherkovski (1945-2024), the great American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. This work is unique within Cherkovski’s oeuvre not only with regards to the bilingual nature of the text, but because of where it sits with reference to the larger arc of his career. 2005 — seeing, as it did, the cardinal Beat-scholastic “re-discovery” of the Second San Francisco Renaissance — was an important year for Neeli’s poetic legacy: a “massive win,” as far as these things are concerned. So, the fact that this work — a Spanish-language text published in Mexico City, MX the following year — appears when it does suggest an analogous expansion, or widening with regards to his “stock,” if you will—his star rising (& sphere of influence widening)—at the international level. From the collection of Thomas Rain Crowe, the legendary American poet and co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance. For more information on the Thomas Rain Crowe archive (assembled & curated by Third Mind Books), see our book, Starting from San Francisco: Thomas Rain Crowe in Conversation with Third Mind Books (Item No. 3071) & the catalog for the Crowe archive (Item No. 1010), which contains several excerpts and quotations from the book as well as a full listing of the archive’s contents, which are now being offered for sale individually on the Third Mind Books site. Trade-format softcover original: the first bilingual edition ("Primera edición bilingüe, 2005"), per copyright page, & 1/1000 copies, per colophon: (“This first edition of Fronteras Rotas was finished / printing at Estampa Artes Gráficas in Mexico City / during the month of April 2005. / The printing was done by Marco Vinicio Barrera. / The circulation was 1000 copies, plus leftovers for replacement. The editing was carried out by / Antonio Saborit”). Published in Mexico by Generación Publicaciones Periodísticas in conjunction with the New College of California's "New Collage" [sic] Press. Immeasurably endowing this lot is the fact that the copy offered here is inscribed & signed (with doodles) by Cherkovski to Thomas Rain Crowe; and is thus a gift from one "co-authorial founder of the Second San Francisco Renaissance" to the other. Cherkovski's inscription & accompanying signature — in thin, black pen ink & flanked by doodles (as previously mentioned) — reads: “13 April 2006 / for Thomas / in / North Beach! / Neeli.” In near fine condition with only mild shelf-wear; light rubbing; some light bumping, and some bump-creasing to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge, though all of a generally understated nature; otherwise, clean. Near Fine. [Item #7360]
