The World Is Not What I Thought: Poems
San Francisco, CA: Sore Dove Press, 2006. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Linda King & illustrator Soheyl Dahi. "A am obsessed/ With horse racing/ I am sure that I am/ Just on the verge/ Of getting it right/ For the big killing/ I mean the really/ Big killing/ Yet, as my money/ Disappears/ I can not believe/ I am a loser/ I just haven't got/ It right/ It/ Is coming/ It is just me/ I didn't see/ That number/ Until after the race/ Tomorrow/ I will get it right" ("Obsessed," unpaginated) A chapbook of poems by Linda King (b. 1940), an American sculptor, playwright, poet & editor who was the girlfriend of Charles Bukowski (1920-1994)- the cult favorite poet-denizen of the dive bar & the racetrack- during 1970-75. Indeed, how could King not be "Obsessed" with that elusive big win at the track, as quoted in the poem above? Many of the other poems in this collection evoke the spirit of Buk, as well as King's other acquaintances, experiences & feelings. With front cover color reproduction of a photograph by Soheyl Dahi (b. 1954), the noted artist & publisher who founded the Sore Dove Press, of which this is a production (see our item No. 6994). Chapbook in stapled wrappers, one of 75 copies from a total edition of 175 hand-numbered & signed by King at colophon (inner rear cover)- this is copy No. 69/75. Below the limitation is King's lush signature in black ink. Additionally, at title page below his printed name which he has crossed out, Dahi has hand-written his signature in black ink. A charming & rewarding King collectible in its penultimately rarest contemporary form (there were 26 lettered copies with original King artwork per colophon), of particular interest to Bukowski-related completists & Dahi devotees.
